Cincinnatus Romanus is built on a simple, four-note idea and several common rhythms in 6/8 time. The heart of the piece is its sturdy simplicity, reflecting the duty of Cincinnatus to accomplish what he was commissioned to do.

The students involved in this commission requested several features be incorporated into the piece: trilling on flute, strong dynamics, melody for the low voices, and a feature for the horn (playable as a solo or soli and cued in the alto saxophone).
